Setup Mode and Connecting to Wi-Fi

When you first turned on your Ring Doorbell, it won’t connect with your home Wi-Fi at first. When you begin setting up the video doorbell, it will enter the Setup Mode. It will ask you to download the partner Ring app on your smartphone, tablet, or PC.

After downloading the app, you then have to register an account. You will need to provide some basic information to complete this. When you are done, the app can now connect to your Ring Video Doorbell.

Check your Ring app and see which network the Ring doorbell is connected to. If it is not even connected, some of the things you can do include:

  • Making sure you connect on the right frequency. Unless you are using Ring Doorbell Pro, Ring Doorbell 3, or Ring Doorbell 3 Plus, your home network must be on 2.4GHz. Only the other three models mentioned can connect to 5GHz.
  • When resetting the device, make sure to long-press the orange button. You will find the button at the back of the device. Hold it for 30 seconds to factory reset and disconnect the device from your Wi-Fi. You can then start connecting again.
  • Ring does not support channels 12 and 13. Therefore, you also have to make sure your home Wi-Fi is on channel 1 to 11. Otherwise, your device really will not connect.

  • Undo the cellular data on your iPhone or iPad as it can occasionally prevent the Ring device from setting-up successfully.
  • Check if the Android Smart Network Switch is active, which can also prevent you from setting up your Ring device successfully.
  • If your Ring Doorbell has a battery or hasn’t been mounted yet, perform a distance test. Move from the router towards the mounting location, checking for how strong the Wi-Fi signal is along the way. If you notice spots where there is interference or if the distance makes the setup fail, you can fix it with a Wi-Fi extender.
  • Sometimes, you overlook the simplest solution – rebooting the modem or router. These devices work the most in your house. As such, you need to restart them at least once a month to ensure optimal performance.
  • As previously mentioned, the last resort of being unable to connect to Wi-Fi is performing a hard reset. The general instruction is to press down the setup button for at least 15 seconds and release it. However, it may get a bit confusing since this particular button is located in different places, depending on the device. Here’s a breakdown of that:
    • Ring Doorbell 2 – Small black button on the front of the device
    • Ring Doorbell Elite – Small black button on the front
    • Ring Doorbell Pro – Small black button on the right side
    • Ring Doorbell 3 – Orange button on the back of the device

Changing Wi-Fi Network
